Digital manufacturing

The Economist has a nice special report on the future of manufacturing. The part that caught my eye was how far/fast 3D manufacturing has come. Image

What’s interesting is how this revolutionary way of making products is likely to change the traditional functional areas. e.g. Does one need to worry about inventory of finished goods when everything is print on demand? Do you need sales? Do you need a distribution channel or is everything direct? Who will be the “Kinkos” of manufacturing?
