Big Data course
With all the hype about Big Data in the air, I find it nauseating even to read about any Big Data articles in the popular press anymore. There are few reasons for this. One, most of them seem to be rehashing the same information, rather than saying something new. Two, there’s very little detail behind the techniques used. Some consultants may find these articles to be at the right level, but I typically like to understand things, rather than mouth buzz words. To remedy this, I decided to take a course on “Web Intelligence and Big Data” from Coursera (the topics covered are shown below).
My verdict: Wow. There’s a lot here. The course covers topics such as indexing, sentiment analysis, Map Reduce, NoSQL, Graph computing, clustering using Big Data, non-linear predictions etc. It has been humbling to see the details and the sophistication in the algorithms/techniques that the real data experts work with on a daily basis. While the delivery of the course left one wanting more, those consultants looking to go deeper into Big Data will find such a course enlightening.
