Two good books for basics of manufacturing / supply chain

A quick pointer to two good books that I have found useful in getting a better/more fundamental understanding of manufacturing and supply chain management:

  • Introduction to Materials Management – Arnold. I would characterize this book as an undergraduate textbook that explains the fundamentals of materials management. It covers production planning, master production schedule, MRP, Production and activity control, purchasing, inventory management, forecasting, demand planning and much more. This is too the point, short on jargon (a good thing) and very clearly written. An easy read.
  • Manufacturing Planning & Control Systems – Vollmann et al. This is definitely not an introductory text. Very detailed (but to the point), this is a tough read but rewarding. This book does a good job of explaining the basics (with examples) and follows up with advanced topics (and pointers).

These should be required reading for all those consultants serving clients in the hi-tech/manufacturing space.
